This horse is known as Andalusian or Spanish although it is also called Thoroughbred Spanish (Purasangre Espaņol P.R.E.).
It is one of the eldest breeds, believed to be even prior to the Berberisc or Arab breed. There are several theories about its origings. One of these theories states that this horse was created from Berberisc, Arab and Iberic horses at the time the Arabs invaded. But there are written and pictorical documents that show a very similar horse to the actual P.R.E. well before the Arabs were in Spain. |

The Romans had these horses in their army. The Spanish horse also helped in the Reconquest and the discovering of America which demonstrates the qualities of this horses for the battle since it is agile, strong and fast. After the wars, the P.R.E. was used with success in classic braking making it very popular among different schools, such as the Vienna school. But its popularity increased during the Golden Century in Spain. At this time started the development of the thoroughbred English with some Spainsh mix. The P.R.E. was maintained in its own land for horse bullfighting. |
Nowadays the popularity of this horse has increased being the European and American its main markets. It is currently used in bullfighting and in different types of braking.
